Healthplus Sports Massage

Healthplus are sports massage therapists who have an excellent proven track record in treating athletes and individuals with lower back pain, sports injuries, trapped nerves, ligament damage, shoulder pain, knee pain, ankle pain as well as all types of chronic pains and muscular problems.

Sports Massage is a complementary therapy concerned with the assessment and treatment of the body’s soft tissues. Soft tissues include: muscle, tendon, ligament and fascia.

A Sports Massage practitioner is trained in the assessment of soft tissue related disorders and the treatment required for effective relief of presenting symptoms or conditions. Following an assessment, the practitioner will manage tissue disorders using various soft tissue techniques; either with a planned programme for injury prevention or, in the case of an acquired injury, rehabilitation to restore soft tissue function.

For sport or other activity Sports Massage can be used to stimulate blood circulation to accelerate the supply of nourishment and oxygen to muscle. The stimulation by massage of the venous and lymphatic systems can also assist in disposal of the metabolic waste that results from activity and can accelerate the recovery period.

In injury rehabilitation focused massage techniques can be used for the breakdown of scar tissue, lesions or adhesions in or between soft tissues. Research has indicated that correctly applied massage techniques could contribute significantly to accelerated injury recovery and resumption of activity.

Sports massage has been proven to increase a muscles overall performance, and is not only a highly effective tool in the treatment of an injury but research has shown that regular Sports Massage treatments are an important factor in injury prevention.

Sports Massage is practiced holistically with concern for the patients’ mental and emotional well being as well as the presenting physical condition. If a practitioner is concerned with any aspect of treatment they may suggest a referral to a specialist or another appropriately qualified health care practitioner.

Conditions Treated by Sports Massage

Sports Massage is not only for those participating in sport or with an otherwise active lifestyle. A high percentage of patients are industrial athletes suffering with the everyday stresses, strains, emotions and pains that go with their working lifestyle.

Sports Massage is regularly and successfully used for the relief of the symptoms of:

  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Hip and Knee Pain
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
  • Headaches
  • Muscle Strains
  • Ligament Sprains
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Myofascial Pain Syndromes
  • Postural / Muscular Imbalances

Early intervention through Sports Massage could reduce the length of treatment and facilitate the return to normal everyday activities

Risks of Sports Massage

Sports massage may not be safe for people with blood clots (e.g. thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis), due to the risk that they may become dislodged. If you have blood clots or are at risk of forming blood clots, it’s essential that you consult your doctor first.

If you’ve had recent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or any other medical procedure, it’s wise to check with your doctor before starting sports massage therapy.

Some people with osteoporosis should avoid the deeper pressure of this type of massage. Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed or infected skin, skin rashes, unhealed or open wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, fragile bones, or areas of recent fractures.

Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a sports massage. Deep tissue massage (or any strong pressure) should be avoided during pregnancy, but your doctor may suggest a massage therapist trained in pregnancy massage.

If you are diabetic and would like a sports massage, there are no contraindications, however you should observe certain precautions. Stay well hydrated before during and after your treatment, notify your sports massage therapist of any particular areas that are bothering you, and make certain your blood sugars are controlled before the treatment. If you plan on delaying a meal because of scheduling, make certain you eat something before going into your treatment so you do not become hypoglycemic during your massage.

If you have wide blood sugar swings, or if your diabetes is poorly controlled, you should see your doctor before considering any activity such as sports massage therapy.
