Healthplus Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a primary health care system, complementary to other medical practices. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. Osteopaths primarily work through the neuro-musculo-skeletal system, mostly on muscles and joints, using holistic and patient-centred approaches.

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis.

The key tools for osteopathic diagnosis include listening to the patient’s history, examining muscles and joints and observing movements. X -rays, scans and other clinical investigations are also used if required. A wide range of gentle, non-invasive manual techniques such as deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation are applied to restore function to muscles and joints.

Clinical evidence has consistently demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of osteopathic care.

Conditions Treated using Osteopathy

With 58% of people in the UK suffering from BACK PAIN at some time in their lives, it is no surprise that this is by far the most common complaint osteopaths are asked to treat. Loughton Osteopathss successfully and regularly treat:

  • Aches and pains
  • Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis in association with other treatment for this condition
  • Arthritic pain
  • General, acute and chronic backache and back pain*
  • Mechanical Neck pain
  • Headache arising from the neck
  • Shoulder and elbow pain
  • Joint pains and lumbago
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sports injuries and tensions

Timely access to osteopathic care can prevent chronicity and in so doing, reduce the negative impact these chronic conditions can have on individuals. Early intervention through osteopathic care can reduce the length of time that people are absent from work as a result of back pain. This will facilitate an early return to normal everyday activities.

Benefits of Osteopathy

Osteopathy patients identify several benefits following Osteopathic treatment, including:

  • Decreased Pain
  • Increased Range of Movement
  • Reduced Disability
  • Improved Quality of Life

Additionally, some patients report improvements in overall wellbeing.

Risks of Osteopathy

Osteopathic Treatment, like all forms of health care, while offering considerable benefits, may also provide some level of risk. The level is often minimal, yet in rare cases injury has been associated with Osteopathic care. Health Plus Clinics requires every patient to make an informed decision about beginning Osteopathic treatment, in particular:

  • While rare, some patients may experience short-term aggravation of symptoms or muscle ligament strains or sprains as a result of manual therapy techniques. Although uncommon, rib fractures have also been known to occur following certain manual therapy procedures.
  • There are reported cases of strokes associated with visits to medical doctors and Osteopaths. Recent studies suggest that patients may be consulting medical doctors and Osteopaths when they are in the early stages of a stroke. In essence, it seems that there was a stroke already in progress. However, you are being informed of this reported association because a stroke may cause serious neurological impairment or even death. The possibility of such injuries occurring in association with upper cervical adjustment is extremely remote.
  • There are rare reported cases of disc injuries identified following cervical and lumbar spinal adjustment, although no scientific evidence has demonstrated such injuries are caused, or may be caused, by spinal adjustments or other Osteopathic treatment.
  • There are infrequent reported cases of burns or skin irritation in association with the use of some types of electrical therapy offered by some Osteopaths.
