Back Pain is a common condition that can often be attributed to lifestyle factors - working at a computer for long periods, driving for considerable periods, as well as bending, lifting and reaching as part of your daily work routine. All these activities contribute to our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. The good news is that together with the expert team at Health Plus Clinics you can begin your road to recovery with safe and effective treatment.

At Health Plus Back Pain Clinic in Buckhurst Hill  our vision is to reduce the impact of back pain by supporting sufferers and promoting education whilst providing a diagnosis and treatment.

The back is a complex structure consisting of:

  • 24 small bones (vertebrae) that support the weight of your upper body and form a protective canal for the spinal cord
  • Shock-absorbing discs (intervertebral discs) that cushion the bones and allow the spine to bend
  • Ligaments that hold the vertebrae and discs together
  • Tendons to connect muscles to vertebrae
  • A spinal cord, which carries nerve signals from the brain to the rest of the body
  • Nerves.
  • Muscles.

With all these structures, back pain can occur in the spine at several levels and produce a variety of symptoms: Back pain generally occurs in three sections of the spine:

  • Upper Back and Neck Pain
  • Thoracic, Mid or Middle Back Pain
  • Lumbar, Low or Lower Back Pain

In the majority of cases, the cause of back pain can be linked to the way that the bones, muscles and ligaments in the back work together. Back pain can come on suddenly or gradually, and is sometimes the direct result of a fall or injury. The complex structure of your lower back means that even small amounts of damage to any part of the lumbar region can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

If you experience back pain, timely access to expert advice can prevent chronic back pain and in doing so reduce the negative impact these chronic conditions can have on your work, lifestyle and everyday activities. When suffering with back pain the key to success is to form a correct diagnosis and develop a treatment plan best suited to provide relief. Should a diagnosis not be possible from history and examination, Health Plus Clinics have established referral processes to MRI, CT and x-ray departments to provide the diagnostic evaluations required to direct treatment.
